Rima Fakih's high-profile saga continues through the judicial process and the media, with new developments concerning the drunk driving case of the former Miss USA being announced last week in Michigan.
We sketched the details of Fakih's DWI/DUI stop and arrest on December 3 last year in a December 5, 2011, blog post. Fakih was pulled over that night in Highland Park, a Detroit suburb, with a police officer stating that she was driving about 60 miles per hour in a 30-mph zone and weaving in and out of traffic. A police report states that a search of the car she was driving uncovered an open bottle of champagne.
Fakih was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving, careless driving and having an open container of alcohol in her vehicle. The maximum sentence she could receive under Michigan law is 93 days in jail, a community service requirement and payment of court costs and fines.
Things have now moved forward in the case, with a judge last week setting a March 14 trial date for Fakih. Alternatively, a plea deal could be reached.
When the matter first emerged in the media, Fakih -- the first Arab-American woman to ever win the Miss USA title, in 2010 -- reportedly admitted she was intoxicated.
Reports now stress her denial that she was drinking at all that night. Police challenge that assertion, pointing to two breath tests they say they administered that showed readings of 0.20 and 0.19, both those levels being well more than twice the legal limit for drunk driving.
